DIY do’s and don’ts for the Classic Kiwi
DIY, it’s in our DNA’ as the Mitre10 Mega ads proclaim. The classic kiwi pastime. Us kiwis, love a DIY challenge. Just picturing the classic kiwi set-up conjures thoughts of stubbies and steel-caps, sweat on the brow, steak ‘n’ cheese in hand, with Dave Dobbyn belting-out in the background as the classic kiwi tackles their latest DIY project. As tried-and-true as meat and three veg, us kiwis aspire to take on any DIY opportunity that presents itself. A chance to flex our DIY know-how with any job at hand – big or small. The sense of pride and achievement that beckons upon the completion of the DIY duty is no mean feat. Not that the classic kiwi is one to boast and tell you about it. As humble as they come, this is just another feather in the cap of the classic kiwi, Jack-of-all-trades DIY-er. Onto the next big job with the same ‘can-do, she’ll be right’ attitude.
For many a classic kiwi DIY doer, hiring a professional brings as much disdain as a general liking for anything Australian. Met with much reluctance, hiring a so-called expert is the equivalent of admitting defeat. Plus imagine the ribbing you will get from your mates! There are times though when, dare we say it, a professional is necessary to get the job done. When you want the right job done, in a timely manner. Remember they are professionals for a reason. Call in the pros for certain tasks like electrical work, plumbing, installation of a new bathroom or kitchen. You’re going to be spending a hefty amount to get the job done – you’re better off making sure a proper, quality job is done. For starters, many home renovation tasks require certain tools and machinery to get the job done. Not only that, but the professionals will be up to play with all the rules and regulations, laws and codes necessary to comply with all that red-tape nonsense.
On the other hand there are a lot of tasks which are more than doable for the classic kiwi. Gardening and landscaping, interior design, wallpapering, water-blasting, general repairs and maintenance around the home and vehicles, as well as a lick of paint here and there are some of the many tasks the classic kiwi is more than capable of DIY-ing. No need to call in the pros unless you feel it is worthwhile and worth the extra spend. Don’t be afraid to call on your mates here either. Particularly your tradie ones who can lend a hand with any chippy groundwork, sparky technicalities, mechanical prowess and plumbing procedures. Make sure the favour is returned in-kind one day. Don’t be that guy who doesn’t return favour. That’s not the classic kiwi way.
Being a home-owner is the stuff classic kiwi dreams are made of. Whether you are striving to get there, or have already ticked the boxes and achieved the milestone, we all know it’s a costly process. On a side-note have you maximised your KiwiSaver, making it work for you? Or, are you seeking to buy your first home? As clichéd as it sounds, to ‘make your house, your home’ is the next step, once you achieve home ownership status. The desired endpoint we all seek. And once again, one that has the potential to require a significant dollar spend. Why are you waiting? Like any goal, you want to achieve the desired target ASAP. Whether you are looking to upgrade, extend, construct, modernise, remodel or renovate your living space, you want to make sure your home improvement dreams and desires are met. Now.
